In July, South Africa celebrates former President Nelson Mandela's birthday. 18 July has been declared Nelson Mandela International Day.

South Africans, however, embrace the chance to  celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life for the whole of July. This gives everyone the opportunity to heed the call to action for people to recognise their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.

Youth Month 2022

South Africa observes Youth Month annually in June. The month is dedicated to the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976 in fighting for quality education.

This year marks the 46th anniversary of the 16 June 1976 student uprising in Soweto, when young people protested against the imposition of Afrikaans by the apartheid regime as a medium of instruction. The uprising ended tragically with hundreds of young people being brutally killed. 

Efforts are underway to help communities affected by floods in the eastern parts of South Africa.

The month of April marks Freedom Month in South Africa.

Freedom Day, on 27 April, is the commemoration of the first democratic elections held in South Africa on 27 April 1994.  These were the first post-apartheid national elections to be held in South African where anyone could vote regardless of race.
