Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma says he is saddened by the death of his "number one protector", Patrick "Sho" Maphumulo.

Captain Maphumulo (39), who had been part of Zuma's security detail for many years, passed away on Sunday in Durban after a short illness.

According to the Presidency, Maphumulo had played the role of "number one protector, always behind or beside the President since his tenure as Deputy President."

Zuma had called him Mashimane, his clan name.

"I am still shocked by the news. When I see the team each morning I somehow forget and think I will see him. It will take a bit of time to get used to not seeing Mashimane. He was soft-spoken and polite, but a very firm no-nonsense man. He was always a pleasure to work with," President Zuma said.

He added that he would miss his protector's commitment, loyalty, dedication and efficiency.

"President Zuma extended his deep-felt condolences to his wife Mrs Nonala Maphumulo, the children and the extended family," said the Presidency.

The President is expected to attend the funeral at Ezinyathini Reserve in Mbumbulu in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.
