Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has congratulated the South African team for their performance at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

South Africa has bagged 16 medals so far - 5 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze and is currently fifth on the medals table.

"The country has been captivated by the Commonwealth Games, with strong performances in swimming, athletics, wrestling, hockey and netball. These accomplishments invoke the spirit of the FIFA 2010 World Cup and once again serve to unify our people.

"All South Africans wait with bated breath for the remaining days of the Games and to more exceptional performances from their fellow countrymen and women, said Zuma on Friday.

He said Natalie du Toit, who has earned two gold medals, had once again proved why she remains an outstanding South African and that 18-year old matriculant, Chad le Clos had impressed with two gold medals. Zuma added that gymnast Jennifer Khwela gave an inspiring performance to take the silver medal in the Vault.

"I wish Team SA well for the remainder of the Games," he said.
