Zuma to meet school principals

Cape Town - The Department of Basic Education has announced that President Jacob Zuma is to meet with the principals of primary schools.

"On 7 August 2009, our President Jacob Zuma will preside in a meeting with principals to outline his expectations on how the education sector should contribute to the broader vision of making things better within the sector," said Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga.

Addressing the media ahead of the department's Budget Vote in Parliament, the minister said that she had discouraged the President from setting such a target as it would be logistically difficult to achieve.

However, President Zuma had said, as outlined in his State of the Nation Address earlier this year, he wanted to meet with all of them to share the vision on the revival of the education system.

The minister said the department had put a date to a meeting whereby district representatives would be invited, along organized labour and organized unions. The provinces will facilitate a report back to all the schools as to what would have been agreed on at the meeting.

"He will definitely be meeting principals in KwaZulu-Natal on 7 August," said Ms Motshekga.
