Zuma determines operation date for Civilian Secretariat for Police Services Act

Sunday, December 1, 2013

Pretoria – President Jacob Zuma has determined 1 April 2014 as the date on which section 4(2) and 4(3) as well as section 14 of the Civilian Secretariat for Police Services Act shall come to operation.

The Presidency said on Sunday that the Civilian Secretariat of Police Service Act, 2011 (Act, No.2 of 2011) establishes the Civilian Secretariat of Police as required by section 208 of the Constitution.

The Act provides it with the necessary powers and functions to exercise civilian oversight over the South African Police.

When Nathi Mthethwa took office as the Minister of Police in 2009, he emphasised the need to strengthen civilian oversight of the South African Police Service.

The minister highlighted the important role the Civilian Secretariat for Police needed to play, not only in providing professional oversight of the police service, but also in the development of policing policy and in the building of partnerships with communities and civil society. – SAnews.gov.za
