Sunday, January 16, 2011

Limpopo - President Jacob Zuma and his Cabinet have met in Limpopo for the January Cabinet Lekgotla where they are expected to thrash out the national agenda for the year ahead.

Described as the "most important session of the National Executive", the Lekgotla will provide the basis for Zuma's State of the Nation Address on 10 February and give direction to government's programme for 2011.

Job creation will be among the issues dominating the agenda at the five day event, according to Minister in the Presidency Responsible for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation, Collins Chabane.

Chabane said departments will over the next few days be expected to rollout their programmes and outline how they will be implementing them. He added that targets will be set to enable government to monitor their progress.

Government will also be reviewing programmes implemented in the past. Chabane said significant strides had been made in addressing crime and in the health and education sectors.

The President, ministers and deputy ministers also meet conscious of the local government elections which are expected to be held in the first half of the year.

Tomorrow, the ministers will take time out of their planned agenda to visit areas in the province which have been affected by flooding.

The Lekgotla entails deliberations among Ministers and Deputy Ministers on the first three days of the meeting, followed by two days of discussions in which Premiers and Directors-General will participate.

President Zuma will officially close the event on Thursday.
