Pretoria - In an effort to provide support to the curriculum, the Department of Basic Education has distributed 13 900 workbooks to schools that offer Grade R.
Presenting the department's budget vote on Tuesday, Minister Angie Motshekga said the department has allocated R750 million for workbooks this financial year.
These learning and teaching packs, which have been given to Grade R teachers, include lesson plans for literacy, numeracy and life skills, learners' workbooks and resource books as well as posters and story books.

She said the allocation of workbooks was a significant contribution towards assisting the department in meeting its challenges. This is a core responsibility on which we are taking decisive action," she said

Lesson Plans in Literacy and Numeracy for Grades 1-6 are also being distributed to teachers in primary schools.

The allocation for the workbooks is expected to reach R1 billion in 2012/13.
