Pretoria - Police have identified the woman whose torso was found inside a burning suitcase in Sunnyside, Pretoria, earlier this month.

"So far we have been able to identify the deceased and we have managed to track her family," said Director Piet Byleveld, who is part of the team investigating the case.

He added that she was originally from Cape Town.

A burning suitcase containing a woman's torso was discovered by a passer-by near a block of flats in Sunnyside. The body's limbs were found in a rubbish bin a few metres from where the grisly discovery was made.

The woman was wearing only a white and orange T-shirt at the time of the discovery.

Byleveld, said police were currently interviewing a number of people in relation to the murder.

"We have not yet made any arrests, we are still interviewing a number of people who last saw the deceased. I'm confident we will soon make a breakthrough," he said.

However, the woman's head has not been found and police are still searching for it.

Earlier, government had urged the public to assist police with information that can lead to the identification of a woman found.
