Westminster Abbey first choice for royal weddings

Friday, April 29, 2011

Beijing - Westminster Abbey has long been first choice for royals to tie the knot and so it will be when Prince William marries Kate today.

Princess Patricia of Connaught was the first royal bride in 650 years who chose the abbey for her marriage to the Honorable Alexander Ramsay in 1919.

Many others have followed since, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Princess Margaret, Princess Anne and more recently Prince Andrew and Miss Sarah Ferguson.

Although William's parents, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, were married at St. Paul's Cathedral, the funeral service for Diana in 1997 took place at the Abbey following her fatal car crash in Paris.

Henry III commissioned the building of the abbey in 1245, replacing a church built by Edward the Confessor.

All English sovereigns since William the Conqueror have been crowned at the Abbey with the exception of Edward VIII. - BuaNews-Xinhua
