Vet charged for dehorning rhinos

Pretoria - A wildlife vet has found himself on the wrong side of the law after he was charged with illegally dehorning 15 rhinos.

According to the South African National Parks (SANParks), Dr Andre Charles Uys appeared in the Musina Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges related to illegal rhino activities.

Uys was arrested on Friday morning through the efforts of the National Wildlife Crime Reaction Unit, led by the Hawks.

SANParks CEO, Dr David Mabunda, said Uys had allegedly carried out the illegal activities in the Maremani Game Reserve in Limpopo.

He was released on R10 000 bail and is expected back in court on 18 March.

Mabunda said Uys's arrest should serve as a reminder that anyone who carried out any illegal or untoward activities in relation to South Africa's wildlife would have to face the full might of the law.
