Union Buildings commemorative R2 coins launched

Thursday, December 19, 2013

Pretoria - In celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the Union Buildings, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has launched a commemorative R2 circulation coin and a limited edition R2 ‘crown size’ sterling silver coin.

In a statement on Wednesday, the SARB said the front of the coin contains the South African Coat of Arms, the year of issue with “South Africa” written in isiXhosa “uMzantsi Afrika” and in Afrikaans “Suid Afrika”.

The reverse (back) of the coin reflects an image of the Union Buildings.

The R2 circulation coin will be introduced from early 2014, and will form part of the coins available throughout the country.

The commemorative R2 coins will be minted by the South African Mint (SA Mint). Over the years, various themes celebrating South Africa have been featured on the sterling silver crown, which is a popular collectors’ coin.

The SA Mint will issue the sterling silver R2 crown as a single coin with a limited edition of 1000 as well as a part of a collectors’ set, containing the crown, the circulation coin and 20 commemorative postage stamps.  These sets will be limited to 700. Both the sets and the R2 crown will be available at the SA Mint and Coin World.

The Union Buildings has been declared a National Heritage site. - SAnews.gov.za
