Pretoria - A total of 24 undocumented Ethiopian nationals were found during a traffic operation by members of the Gauteng Traffic Department in Braamfontein.

Home Affairs spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete said the Ethiopians were traveling in a 16-seater taxi when they were stopped by traffic officers, who escorted them to Brixton Police Station.

According to Tshwete, the driver is also in police custody as charges are being finalised. Of the 24 undocumented individuals, three are assumed to be 15-years-old.

“The 24 persons had no documentation. Also to be established is the likelihood that they were victims of human trafficking, who came to South Africa via Zimbabwe. They may be moved to a place of safety as investigations unfold.

“Immigration Inspectorate officials were invited to assist with the investigation with other law enforcement agencies,” said Tshwete. - SAnews.gov.za
