Two N1 South lanes open

Pretoria - Two lanes along the N1 south bound highway have been opened to traffic after an accident between two trucks and three other vehicles made the road impassible, said the Tshwane Community Safety Department.

"Two of the lanes along N1 south were opened shortly after 9am," said spokesperson Console Tleane on Thursday.

Tleane however added that the N1 north was still closed. "It will hopefully be re-opened at around 3pm," he said, adding that the Atterbury Bridge was still closed.

"This so as to facilitate the dismantling of the crane which is expected to take about five hours," he said.

One person was killed when the brakes of a truck carrying iron rods allegedly failed, causing it to hit another truck on the rear right hand side before plunging into three other vehicles.

The truck then hit a construction crane that was located near the Atterbury Bridge before it overturned and burst into flames.
