Pretoria – Two police officers caught on CCTV camera at the Boksburg Mall last week taking a bribe from a motorist have been served with letters of intention to suspend them.
Addressing the media in Johannesburg this morning, Gauteng Police Commissioner Mzwandile Petros said the two officers have been disarmed, and they have been given until today to give reasons they should not be suspended. The two officers are facing criminal charges.
Although the motorist is known, he has not been arrested as the police could not find him at his place of residence. According to Petros, the motorist was stopped by the police for alleged drinking and driving.
The two police officers, a sergeant and a constable, were captured on CCTV cameras driving into the mall parking area followed by a motorist who got out of his car and went to an ATM machine to withdraw money.
A few minutes later, he returned and appeared to be giving one of the police officers a bribe. On the video, the two officers are seen taking the bribe.
“Where there are corrupt police officers, there are corrupt members of society,” Petros said.
He called on members of the public to report or expose corrupt police officers.
Petros said they were investigating other cases involving police officers implicated in corruption. “When it comes to corruption, we would not hesitate to arrest our own.”
It is alleged that two more police officers in Kempton Park in Ekurhuleni are implicated in an assault case, where the complainant was reportedly assaulted and spent two days in hospital.
Upon being discharged from hospital, the complainant laid charges against the two police officers. – SAnews.gov.za
