Pretoria – The City of Tshwane elected its council during the first meeting on Friday following the 3 August Municipal Elections.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate, Solly Msimanga, was elected as the mayor. The DA's Rachel Mathebe was elected Speaker of the council.

The city manager for the Tshwane municipality, Jason Ngobeni, presided over the swearing in of councillors and the election of the Speaker of council and the new Mayor.

In his maiden address as Mayor, Msimanga said service delivery will remain an apex priority.

Meanwhile in Rustenburg in the North West province, the African National Congress (ANC) retained Mpho Khunou as the Mayor for a second term in that municipality.

Sheila Mabale Huma, also of the ANC, was elected as the new Speaker of the municipality.

The City of Johannesburg, on the other hand, is expected to hold its inaugural sitting of council on Monday. The sitting was postponed last week Wednesday. – SAnews.gov.za
