Tribute stamp to celebrate Madiba

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Pretoria – The South African Post Office has released a special stamp to celebrate the life and times of the late former President Nelson Mandela.

A philatelic souvenir, which is a folder containing a high-quality miniature sheet depicting Madiba and a brief summary of his life history, has also made its debut.

The folder was launched in conjunction with the Nelson Mandela Foundation at the Centre of Memory in Houghton on Tuesday as a means of continuing the Madiba legacy.

Board member and chairperson of the SA Post Office stamp advisory committee, Getty Simelane, said for each folder sold, the Post Office will donate R2 to the foundation.  The proceeds will go towards building 67 libraries as part of the Mandela Day literacy project.

“The item is printed on the highest quality paper, using state-of-the-art printing processes to ensure that the item is immanently collectable. Printed in silver to reflect the richness of Mandela’s legacy and his stature, the miniature sheet features a portrait of Madiba in duotone.  These items are printed using two different plates.

“The souvenir folder will make a great gift to a child who was born on 11 February or on the day Mandela died, or to someone who has memories of personally interacting with Mandela, or to anyone who cherishes his memory and his legacy,” Simelane said.

The souvenir costs R50 and is available from all post offices.  It can also be ordered online at www.virtualpostoffice.co.za.  – SAnews.gov.za
