Tuesday, October 20, 2015

Pretoria – Transport Minister Dipuo Peters will today hold an Imbizo with community members of Umgeni and surrounding areas in the eThekwini Municipality.

The Imbizo will give community members an opportunity to interact with the Minister under the auspices of October Transport Month.

The Minister will also officially open the Umgeni Interchange as part of the month-long campaign, which is aimed at showcasing infrastructure projects with major socio-economic spin-offs in all modes of transport.

The R512 million project was initiated as part of the upgrade programme of the Durban Outer Ring Road and has been jointly funded by South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) and the eThekwini Municipality.

Prior to the upgrade of the interchange, about 20 000 vehicles were travelling through per hour during morning and evening peak hours. Light vehicles constituted 94% of the traffic, while heavy vehicles constituted 6% of the traffic.

Today’s Imbizo will be held at Reservoir Hills Sports Field, which is about 3km from the Umgeni Interchange. – SAnews.gov.za
