Traffic officers on high alert ahead of Easter

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

Pretoria - Traffic authorities will be on high alert along major arterial routes and certain high-accident zones this Easter weekend.

Three choppers will be deployed on the N1 north Moria route, the N3 Van Reenen's Pass, while one medical chopper will be on stand-by at Lanseria.

A mobile unit will also be travelling along these major routes, while indoor centres, rescue camps and help centres will be located along selected routes.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said it has fine tuned the national road safety plan for the period, together with provincial and municipal traffic departments, as part of the Make Roads Safe Campaign for the Easter holidays.

"This on-going, hard hitting traffic enforcement is part of the clean-up for Easter and beyond. We want to make sure that people understand that road safety begins with the road user. We cannot continue to accept that people waiting to board public transport have a 50/50 percent chance of arriving safely," said RTMC acting boss, Collins Letsoalo.

He urged motorists to ensure that they obey all road traffic rules and regulations.

"Motorists are urged to take breaks and make the journey part of the holiday," said Letsoalo.

Pedestrians are urged to ensure that they do not drink and walk, jaywalk, walk on freeways and make sure that they are visible in the dark.

The public is urged to report bad driving to the number 0861 400 800. - BuaNews
