Three in court following Vrede farm arrests

Thursday, February 15, 2018

The three people arrested in connection with the investigations into the Vrede Farm matter are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court this morning.

The Hawks arrested the three following Wednesday morning’s swoop on the premises of the controversial Gupta family in Saxonwold, northern Johannesburg.

The specialised crime-fighting unit has indicated that two more people are expected to hand themselves over to the authorities this morning.

The Hawks have remained mum on the names and details of the suspects but at least one of them is believed to be one of the Gupta brothers.

The Gupta family has been implicated in wide-ranging allegations of corruption, including at Krynaauwslust farm in Vrede in the Free State.

The dairy farm matter is at the centre of the R220 million allegedly paid to the controversial Gupta family and companies linked to their businesses, which was intended for black farmers.

The Portfolio Committee on Police has welcomed the arrests, saying that the concerted efforts to investigate the misuse of state-allocated funds are part of the core mandate of the DPCI.

“The intensified fight against corruption adds impetus to the National Development Plan’s vision of a prosperous South Africa that is safe and has the ability to create job opportunities to its citizenry,” said the Chairperson of the Committee Francois Beukman.

Beukman said they have invited the Hawks to brief the Portfolio Committee on this matter. –
