Thongathi Inquiry resumes next week

Wednesday, March 26, 2014

Pretoria - The Thongathi Mall Commission of Inquiry, investigating the collapse of the mall, is expected to resume its hearing next week.

The mall collapsed in November last year, leaving two people dead and 29 others injured.

The Section 32 hearing, instituted by the Department of Labour, seeks to gather evidence against parties whose negligence resulted in occupational injuries and death of workers, following the collapse of the Thongathi Shopping Mall.

The commission has been given a mandate to gather evidence following concerns and a series of events that led to the tragic incident. It is chaired by the department's occupational health and safety manager, Phumudzo Maphaha.

Next week’s three-day hearing, to start from 2 – 4 April 2014, marks the second session of the evidence gathering testimony that started on 11 February 2014. The hearing is being held at the Thongathi Municipal offices.

Once the Commission has completed its evidence gathering, it is expected to prepare a report of its findings and formulate recommendations, which will be presented to Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for their consideration.

During the first session of the hearing in February, testimonies were given by a foreman at the construction site, two sub-contractors and an engineer. - SAnews.gov.za
