Technical team to map way forward for EC schools

Pretoria - The Department of Basic Education has appointed a technical team comprising senior officials under the leadership of the director-general, to develop a problem analysis and draft an intervention plan for the Eastern Cape.

Addressing the National Council of Provinces on Thursday, Basic Education Deputy Minister Enver Surty said the team will work collaboratively with senior counterparts in the Eastern Cape Department of Education.

Surty said his department had consulted with the leadership of the province and they agreed on a way forward.

"We intend to build capacity in the province to allow the Eastern Cape Education Department to resume its functions as soon as possible."

The Eastern Cape Education Department's problems arose from, among others, a strategic leadership vacuum in the province, the organisation structure and culture, poor financial management systems, and a lack of monitoring and evaluation.

Poor management and capacity constraints in the province have resulted in the termination of a school nutrition project and the suspension of the scholar transport programme.
