Pretoria - The City of Ekurhuleni has set up a team of community leaders, led by councillors, who will interact with the relatives of the family that was allegedly hacked to death by their 14-year-old son in Ethwathwa.

The 14-year-old, who was due to appear in court this morning, now faces charges of murdering his three-month-old sister, his seven-year-old brother, his mother and grandmother on Friday at the Barcelona informal settlement in Ethwatwa in the East Rand.

The minor’s two other siblings, girls aged eight and nine years, managed to escape unharmed.

Expressing shock at what he described as a “most brutal incident”, Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele said the team will help arrange a decent funeral for the deceased.

"We will also send a team of social workers to provide the surviving members of the family professional counselling and support," said Gungubele.

The teenager, according to the police, is now at a place of safety in Cullinan. - SAnews.gov.za
