Task team investigating KZN political killings

Wednesday, September 6, 2017

KwaZulu-Natal police have put in place a multi-disciplinary task team to investigate political violence related cases in the province.

The Task Team, consisting of the Hawks, Detective Service, Crime Intelligence, Local Criminal Record Centre and National Prosecuting Authority is looking at a number of cases that occurred during 2016 and 2017. These include cases of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and intimidation.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, said they are following these cases very closely and is confident that the team is making progress.

“We are appealing to communities to remain calm and allow the investigation team to do their work without any hindrance. Those that have any information that could be of assistance to detectives are also requested to please come forward and cooperate with investigators,” said Langa on Wednesday.

He said they are taking the attack on public representatives in the province very seriously and will do everything within their control to bring the perpetrators to book.

KwaZulu-Natal has been rocked by a wave of political assassinations, with reports indicating that at least 10 politicians have been murdered since January.

The latest victim is the former African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa, who was a councillor in the province.

Magaqa was ambushed by unknown gunmen in July in Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal, along with two other ANC councillors while returning from a meeting. Magaqa died in hospital on Monday. - SAnews.gov.za
