Police have shot and killed two men allegedly responsible for the murder of two security guards in Soweto two weeks ago.

This was confirmed by South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo in statement on Tuesday.

Chilling dash-cam footage circulated on social media of two private security officers shot and killed while they sat in a patrol vehicle in the township on 10 October. The two suspects then proceeded to disarm the two officers.

“This incident was captured on [dash-cam] video which went viral, sparking widespread condemnation by various sectors of society.

“Crime Intelligence and Gauteng Organised Crime Unit worked tirelessly over these past two weeks to track down the culprits.

“Members from the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, acting on intelligence and supported by various other police units, were led to a shack in the Clermont area, west of Durban,” Naidoo said.

When the police officers on Monday attempted to arrest the two, identified as Lindokuhle Cebekhulu (24) and Mbuyiselo Mthonti (26), Naidoo said they resisted, which resulted in both suspects being shot dead.

“There are no reports of any police officers being injured at this stage,” said Naidoo. – SAnews.gov.za
