Support Football Friday, support Banyana

Friday, October 8, 2010

Pretoria - South Africans have been urged to pull out their football gear and once again wear it on Fridays as a show of support for Banyana Banyana, as they prepare for the CAF African Women Championship later this month.

If they succeed in the CAF African Women Championship tournament they will go on to represent Africa at the FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany, in June next year.

The call has come from South African Football Association (SAFA) First Vice President, Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, who said he hoped football fans across the country would give Banyana Banyana their full support.

"During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the rainbow nation's people rallied in support of Bafana Bafana and now is the time to give the national senior women's football team the same amount of respect and support in their quest to qualify for their first FIFA World Cup.

"As a nation, let's stand together and finish this great 2010 football year in the best way possible, by cheering the Banyana Banyana on to a FIFA World Cup place," he said.

Football Friday was the campaign aimed at getting South Africans united behind the 2010 Fifa World Cup by wearing Bafana Bafana jersey every Friday.

The 2010 CAF African Women Championship will be held in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, from 31 October until 14 November.

Banyana will spend time in a training camp in Pretoria from Sunday until 25 October. There is a possibility of a final friendly outing against either Ghana or Equatorial Guinea being played.
