President Jacob Zuma has expressed deep sadness at the passing away of struggle veteran and former Robben Island prisoner, Edward “Eddie” Daniels.

“We have learned with deep sadness of the passing of one of the dedicated and fearless liberation struggle veterans and political prisoner, Comrade Edward Daniels, who contributed immensely in the struggle for freedom and the development of a democratic South Africa.

“We wish to convey our sincere, heartfelt condolences to Daniels’ family and relatives, our prayers and thoughts are with them in this difficult period. May his soul rest in peace,” said President Zuma.

Born in 1928 in District Six, Cape Town, Daniels fought fearlessly for justice and human rights for all.

He was a member of the National Committee for Liberation, which later became the African Resistance Movement, in 1961. The National Committee for Liberation launched its sabotage activities, in which Daniels participated, on 26 September 1961. His fight for freedom led to a 15-year imprisonment in 1964 on Robben Island.

“Mr Daniels will forever be remembered for his selflessness and self-motivated leadership he demonstrated during the struggle against apartheid,” said President Zuma. –
