Pretoria - The nationwide strike by municipal workers will continue until an agreement is reached, says South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) Deputy General Secretary Walter Theledi.

On Wednesday, the two parties, Samwu and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) representatives were locked in a meeting that ended in the early hours of this morning.

In the meeting, the two agreed on certain issues but would not divulge any of the details until they had consulted with their members.

Theledi told BuaNews another meeting is scheduled for tomorrow to iron out the remaining issues.

Salga spokesperson Melisa Kentane told BuaNews that they had agreed on a set of proposals and hoped that they would be some conclusion on the matter.

"We hope that the matter will be finalized amicable and that the workers return to work," she said.

The strike, which has entered its fourth day, has left many bus commuters stranded. In parts of the country, streets have been trashed by the striking workers.

Striking workers are calling on Salga to implement a uniform job grading system and to ban the use of external lawyers during disciplinary procedures.
