Pretoria – KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development Weziwe Thusi has warned women against tolerating and staying in abusive relationships.
This following the arrest of a 46-year-old man in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, whose remains were found burnt in a forest near his home.
The man reported his girlfriend missing last month. It is alleged that the deceased was constantly beaten up before she was murdered.
MEC Thusi said it was important for women in abusive relationships to understand that abuse is a cancer that must be dealt with as soon as it starts.
"Abusive relationships often end tragically. It is also a textbook example of how abuse cases end. I know that women in these situations often feel helpless, but I want to assure them that help is available. All they have to do is speak up," said MEC Thusi.
She commended the police in the case for their quick action, and the security guards who made the gruesome discovery and took action.
She said the department will follow the case to its conclusion because they want to see all abusers landing and staying behind bars.
“We also want to ensure that all those affected receive psycho social support so that they are ready to move on with their lives.” – SAnews.gov.za
