Pretoria - State-owned entities -- ports and rail operator Transnet and telecommunications company Telkom -- on Friday conveyed their condolences on the passing of former President Nelson Mandela.

“It is a devastatingly sorrowful day for South Africans – and indeed for all people around the world. We have lost a great leader and humanitarian who inspired us and gave hope to millions,” said Transnet group chief executive Brian Molefe in his reaction to his death.

Mandela passed away on Thursday night at his Houghton home in Johannesburg. President Jacob Zuma informed the nation and the world of the former President’s passing in a televised address last night.

Transnet described Mandela as more than an iconic figure, saying he personified the spirit of forgiveness, love and compassion.

“Our nation has been blessed with an individual of such rare stature. Let us honour his memory by ensuring that his good deeds live on, embodied in all our actions,” said Transnet.

Telkom board chairperson Jabu Mabuza said the announcement of Madiba’s death has had a profound impact on not only his family, but on South Africans and the world.

“It is with a heavy heart that we offer our condolences to his immediate family and to the wider family of South Africa,” said Mabuza. - SAnews.gov.za
