South Africans spread Madiba magic

Pretoria - South Africans across the country have already started giving 67 minutes of their time in honour of Nelson Mandela.

Today, government officials including a host of personalities and prominent South Africans are serving their 67 minutes of community service for Mandela Day.

The activities include among others, the distribution of ID's to senior citizens in KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, where Minister of Home Affairs Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will hand over the documents to people over the age of 80 at a ceremony at Bulwer Hall.

Minister for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya has swapped her formal attire for a white nursing uniform and reported for duty at the Prince Mshiyeni Hospital.

Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande has also launched the Nelson Mandela Career Guidance Campaign at Giyani in Limpopo, which aims to provide information on post school options to high school learners in rural areas.

In Mpumalanga, Roads and Transport MEC Clifford Mkansi has joined 8 celebrities including popular South African soapie stars, Generations actor Katlego Danke, who plays the role of Dineo and Rhythm City actor Nokthula Ledwaba, who plays the role of Tsidi, to help paint the Pilgrim's Rest Secondary School, plant trees, cut grass and fix broken doors and windows.

Dressed in overalls, the celebrities hosted by the provincial department in partnership with the non-governmental organisation, Ubuntu Helping Hand Institution, are also helping repair street lights.

Also in Mpumalanga, provincial MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation, Vusi Shongwe is spending his 67 minutes helping with the renovation of two houses, handing over a mobile library and donating soccer and netball kits in Ermelo.

In the Free State, MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe and officials from the municipality and the department have dedicated their time at Setiloane Secondary School painting an identified block at the school, while officials from the provincial Department of Water Affairs are spending the day at Jean Webber Home for the Disabled cleaning the yard, fixing leaking taps, donating clothes and computers to the centre.

Veteran Hollywood star, Morgan Freeman, is leading a group of celebrity motorcyclists in revamping a community health centre in Khayelitsha in support of Mandela Day.
