Songs of worship reverberate at Nelson Mandela Foundation

Sunday, December 8, 2013

Johannesburg - Songs of worship across various religions rang out at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory as South Africans came out in their numbers to hold prayers and to reflect on the life of former President Nelson Mandela.

The centre was a hive of activity with cars lining number 107 Central Street, flowers adorning the entrance of the centre and the sounds of drums and voices of the Soweto Gospel choir filled the air.

Dressed in black pants and black tops with stripes of red, the choir kept the growing number of South Africans gathering under a white marque in the parking area of the centre entertained, while others sang along with the choir.

Inside the centre, some South Africans and their children were reading up on Mandela’s life and times.

Photographers and journalists milled the premises of the centre, while police stationed at the gate kept a watch over proceedings at the centre.

Rhema Church Pastor Ray Mccauley was among those seen at the ceremony which kicked off at 11:30am.

Government has reiterated the call for faith-based organisations and society at large to hold prayer services across the country on Sunday, to reflect on and celebrate the life of Mandela.

President Jacob Zuma declared Sunday a National Day of Prayer and Reflection following the passing away of former President Nelson Mandela on Thursday evening.

Yesterday, the President urged people “to gather in halls, churches, mosques, temples, synagogues and in their homes for prayer services and meditation, reflecting on the life of Madiba and his contribution to our country and the world”.

Acting GCIS CEO Phumla Williams said: “As we enter this mourning period, South Africans are urged to unite and reflect on the life and vision of Madiba. The father of the nation served our country and the world with distinguished dignity and we will forever remain indebted to him.

“Government wishes to acknowledge the messages of love and support coming from different parts of the country and the world. We thank you for keeping our young nation in your thoughts and prayers during this trying time,” said Williams.
