Pretoria - The Department of Water Affairs has reduced the number of flood gates opened at the Vaal dam from 17 to 14 and dam levels were expected to be back to 100 percent by today after being 104 percent full.

The department had issued a flood warning to communities living downstream from the Vaal dam as water levels were dangerously high after a high number of storms recently.

By yesterday, figures released by the department showed that the Bloemhof Dam was 94 percent full with an outflow of 2 800m3/s. The Gariep Dam was at 118 percent, with an inflow of 2 000m3/s and an outflow of 2 500m3/s.

The Vanderkloof Dam had reached a capacity of 113 percent, with an inflow of 2 600m3/s and an outflow of 2 400m3/s.

Water Affairs Minister Edna Molewa visited the area to assess the impact on the dam. She also wanted to check on the impact of flood control measures put in place by the department.

Earlier today, the Gauteng Provincial Government said it had been disturbed by the impact of recent floods and devastation caused by the recent storms. The Department of Local Government and Housing has been tasked with the responsibility of co-ordinating relief efforts.
