Pretoria – Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini, and the staff of the department have extended their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Tom Boya, who has passed on after a long illness.

Boya, aged 62, has for many years championed and promoted the rights of older persons in South Africa.  He died on Friday at Linmed Private Hospital in Benoni.

"I want to send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr Tom Boya, who was a staunch campaigner for older person's rights and a committed citizen in working with government to address the challenges facing our senior citizens.

"The news of his passing came on the day I had a meeting with the President's Coordinating Council to discuss the establishment of Older Persons’ Desks in the Presidency and in the Offices of Premiers in all provinces.

“This is one of the issues Boya campaigned tirelessly for. He will be sorely missed for his contribution in the social sector," said Dlamini.

Boya founded the Limpopo Centenarian Club. In 2010, he was appointed the National Chairperson of the South African Older Persons Forum, which is dedicated to advocating for the human rights of older persons by highlighting their plight and generating a voice on key issues affecting them. – SAnews.gov.za
