Tuesday, April 26, 2016

Pretoria - The two-day football tournament to honour struggle hero Temper Mufamadi will help to promote social integration and tolerance in communities in Vhembe District in Limpopo, says Communications Minister Faith Muthambi.

Minister Muthambi will host the Temper Mufumadi soccer tournament in Malamulele where eight local teams will battle it out on Saturday, April 30 at Malamulele stadium. The finals will be played on Sunday, May 1 at Levubu stadium outside Tshakhuma.

“This tournament is dedicated to struggle hero Temper Mufamadi, who devoted his life to promoting unity amongst communities in Vhembe District. As government, we strongly believe that this tournament will help to promote social integration, tolerance and help to reduce tension as football … brings individuals and communities from different racial and ethnic groups together in a fun environment,” she said.

The Minister will award the winning team a cash prize of R10 000 on Sunday. The second placed team will receive R5 000.

Since 1994, sport has been a unifying force in South Africa. A dedicated focus was placed on transforming this sector to ensure equitable access to sporting opportunities.

“Sport has contributed towards increased interaction across race and class. Football, just like any other sporting code, can cut across the barriers that divide society, as it is a powerful tool to support conflict prevention and peace building efforts. As government, we are optimistic that this tournament will strengthen social cohesion,” Minister Muthambi said. - SAnews.gov.za
