SIU refutes corruption claims

Thursday, May 24, 2018

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has rejected allegations of corruption made in Parliament on Wednesday.

During the debate on the Presidency’s Budget Vote speech in the National Assembly, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema alleged that some members of the SIU took bribes from people they were investigating.

On Thursday, the SIU slammed the claims, saying that it handles all cases brought to it by members of the public or State institutions without fear or favour.

“The SIU investigations are handled with the strictest confidentiality and once completed, the law requires the report to be sent to the President. Consequence management and legal actions are implemented without delay.

“Each case is handled independently on its own merits, with the integrity and vigour it deserves. The SIU is steadfast in its commitment to uphold the rule of law and the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa in the implementation of its mandate. The SIU will fight corruption wherever it manifests itself within our society,” the SIU said.

To date, the SIU has made significant strides in improving its business process and has recovered significant amounts lost through corrupt activities.

It urged citizens to report any acts of corruption or misconduct by its investigators to the Head of the SIU Advocate Andy Mothibi (info@siu.org.za) or to the nearest police station or through the Anti-Corruption hotline 0800 701 701.

“Fighting corruption is everyone’s business, which requires cooperation with government, citizens, business, labour and civil society,” said the SIU. – SAnews.gov.za
