Pretoria – The Northern Cape has seen a capital injection of about R6.5 billion to the development of the Stanley Nkosi Sinter Mine in Hotazel.

“Through this project, the Northern Cape has seen a capital injection of about R6.5 billion, within four years, with at least 3 000 direct jobs created, and skills being developed among local youth,” said Acting Minister of Performance Monitoring, Evaluation and Administration Angie Motshekga in Pretoria on Thursday.

She was briefing media following Cabinet’s last meeting of the year.

Motshekga said Cabinet welcomed the mine of Kalagadi Manganese company, which is the world's largest manganese sinter plant and the first such mine to be owned by a woman.

This forms part of the package of projects coordinated by the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission, led by President Jacob Zuma. The President launched the mine on Friday.

The Stanley Nkosi Sinter Mine has also provided infrastructure that will benefit local communities and boost economic growth in the province.

The supporting infrastructure includes the redevelopment of 9.6km of provincial road and bridge, a new reservoir to store 17 million litres of water, a 40 MVA electricity substation, and a 23km railway line and loop linking to the main Transnet line in Port Elizabeth.

The mine has also said that none of the ore will be exported without an element of beneficiation.

The final phase of the mine will be the construction of a smelter plant in the Coega Industrial Development Zone at a cost of R6 billion. – SAnews.gov.za
