School bell rings for millions

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Pretoria - Neatly dressed in their new school uniform, millions of children countrywide made their way back to school to start the 2010 academic year.

As early at 6am, learners countrywide, who couldn't wait to go back to school, were seen queuing at the bus stops waiting for their school transport.

The excitement was written all over their faces especially the scholars who were wearing their new uniforms for the first time, struggling to carry their school bags.

While some learners were jubilant, other little ones couldn't let go of their parents due to the fear of being in a new environment.

Almost a million Grade 1's are beginning their academic career and hundreds of thousands more are entering their final year of schooling.

In order to ensure that the first day of the re-opening of schools starts without any glitches, some Cabinet members, provincial premiers, MECs and councilors have already arrived at schools, checking if there are any problems and to ensure that teaching starts today.

Deputy Minister for Basic Education Enver Surty and Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will be visiting schools in the Eastern Cape to ensure that everything is going well.
