SAWS warns of severe thunderstorms

Thursday, March 26, 2026

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecast shows that partly cloudy and warm to cool conditions are expected, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers possible over the central and eastern parts of South Africa from Thursday afternoon.

“Conditions are favorable for the development of severe storms, potentially leading to minor impacts expected over most parts of the Free State and Northern Cape, except the north today and tomorrow,” the weather service said on Thursday.

As a result, there could be localised damage to infrastructure, settlements (informal), property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock.

There is also a possibility of flooding that could affect roads and bridges, large amounts of small hail over open areas and failing trees blocking minor roads.

Meanwhile, on Friday and Saturday, cloudy and cool conditions are expected in the east.

“Otherwise, partly cloudy and warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers possible over the central and eastern parts of South Africa,” SAWS said. -SAnews.gov.za
