Mark Kingon has been appointed as acting Chief Officer of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) following the resignation of Jonas Makwakwa.
Kingon, who has been with the revenue service for close to 34 years, has been appointed to temporarily fill the post of Chief Officer: Business and Individual Taxes (BAIT).
SARS made the appointment following Makwakwa’s immediate resignation on Wednesday.
Kingon is currently the Group Executive: Relationship Management within BAIT.
“Kingon is a respected senior executive, who has risen through the ranks of the organisation, having worked in enforcement and in the legal department of SARS, amongst others,” said the revenue service on Wednesday.
Makwakwa had returned to the revenue service in November 2017 after having charges against him cleared. He had been placed on suspension for approximately a year following the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) report to SARS containing some serious allegations against him.
The revenue service expressed full confidence in the incoming acting Chief Officer.
