Pretoria - Police have confirmed that former Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant General Richard Mdluli has been suspended.

"A letter of suspension was served to his lawyers. The suspension is effective from 26 May," South African Police Services (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Lindela Mashigo told BuaNews on Sunday.

Mashigo added that the acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi had taken the step of suspending Mdluli in response to the serious allegations that had emerged from an inquest.

Mdluli is facing charges in relation to alleged mismanagement of Crime Intelligence funds and nepotism.
