SANParks welcomes rain in Limpopo

Monday, January 18, 2016

Pretoria – South African National Parks (SANParks) has welcomed the 60mm of rain recorded at the Limpopo River over the weekend.

The rain broke the extended heatwave and dry spell that had been persistent in the area and the rest of the country over the past weeks.

From 15-16 January 2016, the northern parts of the country experienced heavy and extended rainfall.

Although the drought has not come into full swing in the Park and the surrounding areas, the 60mm of rain recorded over the weekend has brought much needed relief to the water sources in the area, Limpopo River being the biggest.

Divhani Maremba, Northern Region Communications Manager said a prolonged drought season can lead to many adverse situations in parks.

“So we truly welcome the rain and it is exciting to see the river in this state,” he said.

More rain is still expected in the area over the next two days. – SAnews.gov.za
