Pretoria - The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will assist with the rescue operations of a boy who fell into an abandoned mine shaft, in Ekurhuleni, at the weekend.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina sent an official request to the Minister of Defence asking for further assistance in the rescue operation.

The boy fell into the mine shaft on Saturday.

The SANDF is expected to land at Jerusalem informal settlement on Thursday.

“The Department of Mineral Resources has dispatched a team, led by the Mine Rescue Services (MRS), which gave a detailed report of all possible dangers of the operation and limitations.

“The Mayor indicated that all avenues which are available will be exhausted prior to calling off the rescue mission,” the City of Ekurhuleni said.

The SANDF will be on site to advise and assist on the possibilities of what can be achieved and hopefully bring finality to the matter. – SAnews.gov.za
