SAFA launches official mascot

Bloemfontein - As the spirit of the 2010 FIFA World Cup continues among soccer fans, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has launched its official mascot called DISKI.

DISKI made his debut public appearance on Monday and is expected to make another appearance tonight at halftime during the match between Bafana Bafana and Jamaica at the Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein.

SAFA Chief Executive Officer Raymond Hack said their official mascot DISKI was conceptualized and registered in 1998 and with the FIFA World Cup on their doorstep, they thought it only fitting that the favorite Bafana Bafana supporter be brought to life and introduced to South Africa.

"DISKI embodies the true spirit of all South African soccer loving people and we are proud of the footsteps that he will leave in our local communities and in the hearts of every person who meets him," said Hack.

He also pointed out that there were various ways in which fans can show their passion not only for their own national side, Bafana Bafana, but for the Beautiful Game in general, and DISKI will be at the forefront of that as he welcomes the world to Mzansi.

DISKI is shaped like a football and has a personality of his own. He carries the South African flag as he proudly supports his team both on and off the field of play. But DISKI also has a number of other characters, including that of a coach, vendor, Inyanga and doctor, as he travels around the country spreading the word among the youth of South Africa.

He is a friendly and lively character who looks forward to welcoming all football supporters to Mzansi and interacts with local fans across the nation.

SAFA said DISKI will also attend other SAFA and national team activities, including Bafana Bafana games, community activities, and can even be booked for corporate events.

"DISKI's objective is to engage the youth in educational pursuits, as well as displaying the fun nature of football and how loyalty to your team can be rewarding," said SAFA.

Soccer lovers must look out for DISKI around the country as he flies the flag for South Africa and Bafana Bafana.
