Safa expels Chief Nonkonyana

Pretoria - The South African Football Association (Safa) has expelled its former Vice President, Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, for violating the football administrative body’s constitution.

Safa took the decision during its 24th Congress, held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Saturday, where they also reported a R10-million profit for the 2013/14 fiscal year.

A statement released by the association read: “The Congress finally resolved to expel former Safa Vice President Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, who violated football’s fundamental constitution of taking football matters to the courts of law.

“The Safa Congress unanimously resolved to expel Chief Nonkonyana from football.”

The country’s football body, led by Dr Danny Jordaan, suspended Nonkonyana in October last year following his comments that former Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund should be fired if Bafana failed to reach the finals of the 2014 African Nations Championship (Chan).

Meanwhile, Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula has lauded the new Safa leadership for a job well done. He said the current victories of the national team were a result of Jordaan’s vision.

Minister Mbalula also gave the U20 and U17 national teams cheques for R120 000 and R110 000 respectively for qualifying for CAF tournaments.

The national U20, commonly known as Amajita, will represent the country at the African Youth Championships scheduled for Senegal next year, while Amajimbos will participate in the 2015 African Junior Championship in March in Niger. - SAnews.gov.za
