Pretoria - The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) has commended the South African Police Services (SAPS) for the decrease in bank and cash in transit (CIT) related crimes.
This as the national crime statistics were released in Parliament on Tuesday.
South Africa only saw about 17 bank robberies – there were 21 previously - while there were only 119 robberies of cash in transit vehicles which is down from 145 in the previous financial year.
“The decrease demonstrates a positive impact in the fight against these crimes. The decrease shows that the collaborative efforts of the partnerships between SABRIC and its strategic partners such as SAPS and other crime fighting bodies continues to bear positive results,” SABRIC said.
However, the centre said the banking and CIT sector would like to see further significant decreases and speedier responses to the outcomes of investigations and prosecution.
“It is to be noted that the downward trend in ATM attacks has been consistent with the past few years which demonstrates the strategic initiatives implemented collectively.
“Whilst incidents have decreased, the industry is concerned that the cash losses have increased significantly showing a rise between 2013/2014 to 2014/2015. It must be noted however, that a few of the incidents recorded very high losses,” it said. – SAnews.gov.za
