Pretoria - Communications Minister Faith Muthambi says the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has a crucial role to play in the promotion and protection of culture and heritage.
Minister Muthambi was speaking at the end of Indoni Cultural Festival in Durban on Saturday. The two-day festival, which started on Friday, was sponsored by the SABC and the Department of Arts and Culture.
“We are very proud to have witnessed our different and diverse cultures on display through exhibitions and fashion shows. It is projects like Indoni that will help bring moral regeneration to our youth and to restore core values and pride in our identities.
“Media have an integral role to play in building social cohesion and we encourage more young people to take such initiatives seriously and play their part in creating a better nation that celebrates its people,” the Minister said.
The festival, which was launched in 2011, was created to promote the development of young people through arts and culture, promoting moral regeneration, cultural diversity, social cohesion among the various cultural groups of South Africa and advocating pride in heritage among young people.
The project is aimed at helping young people develop strategies and approaches that will arm them in avoiding and dealing with the effects of the social effects facing society today.
The overall winner was Indoni YamaZulu Nomkhosi Nzuza and the runner up was Indoni YamaSwazi Nolungelo Shongwe.
The Face of Indoni prize, which is selected based on the finalist with the most votes, went to Indoni YamaNdebele Thobile Chilli.
The Miss Ubuntu Prize, which is awarded to the finalist who demonstrated kindness, humanness, warmth and compassion during the period leading up to Miss Cultural SA in Durban, went to Indoni YamaTsonga Kanetani Mathebula. - SAnews.gov.za
