SABC continues engaging unions

Johannesburg -The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is continuing engaging with unions in a bid to end the strike by employees over wages.

"We will continue to talk to the unions," SABC Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago told BuaNews.

Workers belonging to three unions suspended their lunchtime pickets at the broadcaster's offices after handing over a memorandum demanding a 12.5 wage increment on Tuesday.

The unions are the Communications Workers Union (CWU), the Media Workers Association of South Africa (Mwasa) and the Broadcast, Electronic, Media and Allied Workers Union (Bemawu).

"The demands set out in the memorandum revolve around the salary issue and as well as audit reports but the main thing is the salary matter," said Mr Kganyago.

The broadcaster had earlier offered the unions an increment of between 9.25 and 10.25 which went beyond the broadcaster's mandated 8.5 percent. The offer was subsequently rejected.

Mr Kganyago said that a follow up meeting between the SABC and the unions has been arranged and that the unions have given the SABC two days to respond to their demands.

He said the SABC was considering the matter.

Mwasa General Secretary Ernest Dlamini said that in the meantime, the unions would engage their members as to what the next step should be.

"We will be meeting members tomorrow," he said.
