International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) Deputy Minister Luwellyn Landers will this week engage in a wide range of bilateral issues during an inaugural session of political consultations in Tunis, in Tunisia.
Landers will be in the country from Wednesday to Thursday where he will also meet with Tunisia Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Sabri Bachtobji, during a working visit.
In a statement, Dirco says the two countries maintain cordial bilateral relations that are based upon the Joint Bilateral Commission (JBC) that was launched in 1996.
In this regard, a Senior Officials’ meeting between the two countries will take place in Tunis on Tuesday. Deputy Minister Landers’ visit will help to re-activate interaction between the two countries on bilateral issues and identify new areas of economic and bilateral cooperation,” the department said.
During the visit, Deputy Minister Landers will pay a courtesy call on the Tunisian Foreign Minister, hold consultations with the Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts as well as the Secretary of State for International Trade.
Landers is also scheduled to deliver the Nelson Mandela Centenary lecture at the University of Tunis II during the working visit.
According to Dirco, bilateral relations between South Africa and Tunisia are very healthy and mutually beneficial politically and economically.
During the third session of the Joint Commission held in Tunis in April 2001, the two countries largely focused on enhancing relations in the fields of trade and investment; health; tourism, and environmental affairs; arts and culture, science and technology; and political consultations regarding foreign relations. – SAnews.gov.za
