SA mobilised to register to vote

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

Pretoria - The MEC for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Mpumalanga, Madala Masuku, has urged all prospective voters in Mpumalanga to visit their voting stations to register or check if their names appear on the voters' roll of their respective voting districts, this coming weekend.

All South Africans over the age of 16 can register to be on the voters' roll but will only vote once they turn 18.

"This is a special registration weekend (5-6 March) to be held in all voting districts and we are encouraging all South African citizens eligible to vote, to make use of the opportunity provided by the Independent Electoral Commission to register for the local government elections. If you do not register or do not appear on your district voters' roll, you will not be able to vote in the forthcoming local government elections.

"We also urge those who do not have identity documents to take advantage that the Home affairs Offices will be open on 5th-6th March 2011 to go and apply or collect their identity documents," said Masuku. - BuaNews
