SA marks Earth Hour

Monday, March 26, 2018

South Africa saved a total 410 MW of electricity during Earth Hour at the weekend, said Eskom on Monday.

Earth Hour is an annual global event, initiated in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, to encourage people to switch off their lights and unused appliances for an hour as a symbolic demonstration of their commitment to action against climate change.

Marked each year on the last Saturday of March, South Africans joined people from around the globe between 8:30pm to 9:30pm in going off the grid.

They used their collective voice to inspire, motivate and lead the charge on their hopes, dreams and concerns about the planet.

The power utility encouraged South Africans to make energy efficiency part of their lifestyles.

“Eskom encourages people to take action beyond this one hour and to make energy efficiency and environmental conservation part of their daily lifestyles,” it said. -
